Thank you for your interest in my website where you will
find information about all of my music, from my First
Symphony (premiered in 1941) to my most recent scores.
It has been my good fortune to be commissioned by many great
orchestras, opera companies and choruses, exciting soloists and
chamber groups, lively school choirs and bands, and various churches.
My second opera, The Crucible (based on Arthur Miller’s powerful play), won the Pulitzer Prize for Music and the New York Critics Circle Citation Awards in 1962 and has taken me around the world to attend or conduct performances.
Three Guggenheim Fellowships have provided me with respite from my busy life of teaching, conducting, heading Galaxy Music Corporation, and my years pioneering the North Carolina School of the Arts as its president. Over the years I’ve also served on the faculties of Queens College of New York, Columbia University, The Juilliard School, the University of North Carolina, and Duke University. I have been awarded four honorary doctorates; from the Peabody Conservatory, Duke University, The University of North Carolina/Greensboro, and North Carolina State University.
It’s been a wonderful and exciting life, and I hope you will learn more about it, and my music, as you go through this website. Please feel free to contact me or my publisher (E.C. Schirmer Publishing) with any questions you may have.
